1. Our vicar is always raising money for one cause or another, but he has never managed to get enough money to have the clock repaired.

1) the clock was striking the hours.是解释性分句,位于冒号之后,对with a start做具体说明.

2) start n. 突然一动,突然一惊

with a start = in surprise 惊讶地

例:

The news gave me quite a start.(surprised me)

He sat up with a start.=He sat up in surprise.

3. Looking at his watch, he saw that it was one o'clock. =He looked at his watch and he saw that it was one o’clock. (Looking at his watch 是现在分词短作伴随状语)

例:

He sat in the chair and read a book. =He sat in the chair reading a book.

He ran up to me and breathed heavily.= He ran up to me breathing heavily.

4. Armed with a torch, the vicar went up into the clock tower to see what was going on.= The vicar was armed with a torch and he went up into the tower to see what was going on. (Armed with a torch是过去分词短语作伴随状语)

例:

Mary came out of the room and she was followed by her dog. =Mary came out of the room, followed by her dog.

Peter went to work and he was burdened with worries. =Peter went to work, burdened with worries.

He was gazing into the distance and he was fascinated by the beautiful evening blow. =He was gazing into the distance, fascinated by the beautiful evening blow.

2) arm v. 武装;装备(equip/supply sb. with weapons, prepare for war or fighting)

arm sb. with… 给某人装备上.…..

Sb. be armed with… 某人备有所需的…

例:

They armed themselves with sticks and stones.

Those warships are armed with nuclear weapons.

He was armed with a rifle.

The police were heavily armed.

4. In the torch light, he caught sight of a figure whom he immediately recognized as Bill Wilkins.

1) catch sight of 一眼看见; 瞥见

例:

She caught sight of a car in the distance.

2) figure n.体形;数字;人像 v.认为

figure … out 弄明白……;算出或想出……

例:

They also found something which the X-ray plates did not show: a small wax figure of the god Duamutef. (人像)

I’m watching my figure. (体形)

By 2006, this figure had risen to 16 million.(数字)

I figured that if l took the night train, l could be there by morning. (认为)

We couldn't figure her out. (弄明白)

Have you figured out how much this trip will cost? (想出、算出)

3) recognize 或recognise v.承认;认出

recognize A as B. 承认或意识到A是B

例:

They recognized the need to take the problem seriously.

Everyone recognized her as his lawful wife.

5.'Whatever are you doing up here, Bill?’ asked the vicar in surprise.

1)特殊疑问词+ever 既可表示“无论……”,又可表 示 “究竟……”(此意时表示语气强调)

例:

Whatever do you mean?

Whoever broke my vase?

Whichever do you want?

Wherever did you see him stealing?

2) in surprise 惊讶地

例:

She looked at them in surprise.

You certainly did give me a surprise. 在句中无其它助动词时,可以用do/does /did (的确)加上谓语动词原型来对谓语动词进行强调,以加强语气.

例:

He does look tired.

She did write to say thank you.

The letter I was expecting did arrive yesterday.

I do hope you will come.

I know that you didn't expect me to go, but I did go.

Still, I'm glad the bell is working again.

1) still adv. 仍然;尽管如此,然而

例:

Will you still be here when l get back?

We could still change our minds.

He has treated you badly; still, he is your brother and you should help him.

I have only one old car; still, it's better than nothing.
